0147WOADis13_3771In 2011, the San Diego Waves joined forces with USO San Diego, The Knights of Columbus, San Diego residents, local businesses and clubs to create 2,000 Waves of Appreciation bags that were handed out to active-duty service members departing from Lindbergh Field the six days before Thanksgiving and Christmas. Over a total of 10 days, 365 volunteers put in 1,228 hours to assemble and distribute bags filled with granola bars, beef jerky, dried fruit, cookies and other non-perishable food items. However, the WOA bags ran short before the end of the holidays and despite pulling together an additional 500 bags, distribution came to an end several days before Christmas.

Not wanting service members to go without a WOA bag, Waves of Appreciation continues to increase the number of bags they put into the hands of active-duty service members each year.

Through a collaborative effort with USO San Diego, the Knights of Columbus  and other strategic partners the project continues to grow.

San Diego has one of the largest concentrations of active-duty military in the free world. Over 3,000 service members travel home for the holidays through the San Diego International Airport, some the last trip home before deploying. Many times our service members travel hungry unable to afford the airport food on their long journeys.

The Waves of Appreciation bags – or WOA bags – contain food and snacks to sustain our service members. Please join us in thanking the men and women who serve our country by donating to the WOA bag project or volunteering your time.

It’s time for the Knights of Columbus to go to Lindberg Field to support our service men and women with gift bags as they travel to various destinations for the holidays.

The date is Sunday, December 2Ist, starting at 6:00 am.

We will be working in 4 hour shifts, 6:00 am to 10:00 am, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, 2:00 pm till 6:00 pm.

If you are available and wish to help, please let me know what time you would like to schedule. Although this is a Knights of Columbus event, you’re welcome to bring any and all volunteers with you. Please include the ladies.  There is room for everyone. I look forward to hearing from you. If you have question you can call Larry Campitiello at (858) 487-2832.
